KZ1000 Engine in Golf Cart
30 Jan 2022 14:34
So I have this kz1000 engine in a golf cart that I am failing to get spark from.
I have wired up a test bench on the engine in attempt to get spark with no luck. I am thinking my problem may lay in my points system.
I have checked it out and the right point becomes .3mm away from the cam while the left is like a 1/16 of an inch away.
Attached below are some pictures that may help describe my situation. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Actually, there are no points in that system, it is fully electronic. I do not see the igniter anywhere. Is it hooked up? You are right that the gaps should be very close to the same. It looks like somebody has been turning the crank with what looks like a 13mm bolt head. It is not a bolt head, and if somebody has had a wrench on it, the roll pin under it may have sheared off. If that is the case, you may be facing a fairly involved repair.
What you have is referred to as a J engine. It was produced from 1981 to 2005. Under the Articles tab of the forum is a link to service manuals that you can download. There is one that covers the 1981-1985 ( I think). It will have information on the ignition system. I am not aware of any significant changes, but if your engine was from a police bike, you may also need that supplement.
There is also a chart here that lists engine numbers for the early years. Sadly, I have not been able to find that information for most of the police bikes.

Depending on the ohms of the coils you might also need a resistor inline of the coils power.
