KZ 750 LTD starter smoking
02 Jun 2022 07:12
My first post needing some guidance on an electrical issue. 83 KZ 750 been running like a champ and the other day I put the kickstand down in some soft dirt while the bike was running and it fell over on its side for no more than 30 seconds and when I tried to restart I got nothing. Starter was turning but it wouldn’t fire. I thought that the gas from the float bowls may have doused the plugs so I waited for a couple of hours and tried again with the same results
after several more attempts the starter started smoking and I noticed that my neutral and oil lights wouldn’t come on as well as my brake lights Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Put a used starter on and it doesn’t smoke but still won’t crank. Neutral, oil and brake light not working

Did you prime the carburetors before trying to start it? The smoking starter may be from over use trying to start it. The lack of lights could be from the battery being drained by the starter.
If you have a standard lead-acid battery, insure that the electrolyte is at the proper level. Give the battery a charge. When it is ready, turn the petcock to PRI for 15 or 20 seconds, then try to start it.

I agree with Texas, first thing is check the battery voltage both static and when you try and crank - if it is a wet battery has the electrolyte drained out when the bike was on it's side IF YES THEN HOSE EVERYTHING THOURALY SO THAT THE ACID DOESN'T START EATING EVERYTHING IT HAS COME IN CONTACT WITH

Even if the battery was virtually flat the neutral and oil lights would work to some extent. Sounds more like one of the 10amp fuses has broken/blown from the sudden jolt especially if it is one of the original glass fuses.
Are you getting a spark when it's turning over?
