Ignition system

Can anyone explain the ignition system?  I was able to get spark on the bike by giving each coil 12V directly from the battery and connecting the coil grounds from the IC igniter to each respective coil. Now there's a red/yel wire and a black/yel wire from the igniter. The black/yel is hooked up as a ground and the red/yel is getting 12V from the battery. Is this correct. I know I was able to get spark with it wired this but I can't wrap my head around why the IC igniter would need 12V too. Attached is the diagram I'm following

The igniter needs an ignition live and ground like any other consumer to function, two "pairs" from the pulse generators and two "trigger" wires (green and black) to the coils
