Okay - I'm at a stand still here.
I need to get the 'crush pin' or whatever it's called (number 7 in the diagram below), but I can't figure out how to do it.
It's ridiculously tight..am I stuck with having to buy a new assembly? I really hope not..I'd like to be able to use my speedo instead of a bicycle speedo sometime
Help?

I'm guessing there is no way to drive it straight out the other side? If that's the case I guess you can try drilling it out.
What does that pin hold in place, #9 or #10 ?
I see these on ebay often, matter of fact I sold one for $10 to someone here a few months ago..

replaced, eh?
Hrm...well Ron Ayers has the whole thing for $50, and with shipping, exchange and taxes that'd likely come to around $90 for me.
It's a steal compared to the $120 that the dealership wants for the same part..plus tax
I'll try drilling it out.
It holds #10 in, which holds the gear itself.

Aight..I got it apart.
I had to drill from the top, then hacksaw the side so that I could use a small slot screwdriver to hammer it out.
It was a bugger. It's a good thing it doesn't serve any structural need though - cause a chunk of aluminum broke off, and the cut down the side could reduce the integrity.
In this one - you can see how chewed up the gear was. The 2nd bevel gear (that I replaced a few months back) was just as bad...no wonder it wouldn't turn the cable any more
I'm going to use a cotter pin to put it back together, once I get a new gear from RonAyers.com (or somewhere equally cheap)
Cheers.
PS: it turns out after tax, exchange, and shipping - it's cheaper to go to my local dealer, which I have. I'm excited to have working gauges this year!

Grease the new ones well. Use a synthetic grease, and keep it all clean in there. I believe this is one of the areas that's recommended to service regularly.

yeah - that'd be a really good thing to do. I didn't even open it up after getting the bike, and this happened..I doubt that it was from a couple months in my hands, but ya never know, I guess.
I'll be taking care of it from now on - especially since the unit would run me $120 from my dealer
