630 chain vs 530 ? was created by BSKZ650
working on the LTD 1000 I have a tight spot in the current set up it has a 14/33 630 on it now
I have looked in the archives and have seen a lot about going to the smaller chain, is this the best way to go? and is there any spacing issues when making the change.
Also there has been a lot of talk about where to get the best chain and sprockets, which is the best
Thanks

I looked at that, and it got me to thinking more about asking weather to change or not

I did this conversion on my '78 LTD, and was very pleased with the results. I went with 18/38 sprockets. It lowered my cruising RPMs, but still left me plenty of take-off power (though I'm not a racer off the line).

530 X-Ring chain and 630 O-Ring chain are virtually the same width - they both use 3/8 wide rollers (that's the 30 in the 530 and 630 - that means 3/8" width for the rollers).
Spacing isn't an issue provided you install a spacer washer on the front sprocket.
The benefits for 530 over 630 are considerable - cheaper, better selection, better wearing, and lighter. The cons - really none - except for a couple of bikes where there isn't a readily available 530 rear sprocket (KZ900 LTD uses a unique rear sprocket - so no 530 rears are readily avialable).
