frame differences was created by jake72ss
I would like to know what the difference is between the frame on an ELR type kz and the frame on the earlier(pre '80) frame. Several years ago I owned a kz1000ltd I think it was a '78 or '79 model. Anyways I have the option to buy the bike again and would like to make it more of an ELR type of bike. Thanks for any help. Jake

the 81-82 Jmodel/ELR/GPZ frame has more bracing, uses different motor mounts, bigger forks, seat does not have hinges, almost nothing interchanges.
the 81-82 LTD/CSR frame has a hinged seat, bolted on gas tank,no bodywork in the rear, again almost nothing interchanges with pre 1980 frames.
I don't know about the 83-84 frames.

Jake, I have seen a number of pre-1981 Z's that have been ELRicized. The trick (to the eye) is one of primary use of the paint schemes of the 1982/3 ELRs. However, since little swaps between pre- and post-1980 bikes, you are stuck with either LTD or standard body styles (unless you really want to get into fabricating mounts, etc., then anything is possible). Use the standard body style as size-wise, it more closely approximates the tank sizes of the GPz/ELR lines. Many of the early KZ model ELR clones I have seen have been very nice...some, less so :S

The ELR uses a completely different frame - the rake/trail is different for sure - don't remember the degree difference, but it's a degree or two
