Throttle Tube Lubrication

I'm getting ready to start putting my controls back on the bike and I was wondering what is used to lubricate the throttle tube that slides on over the handlebar? Do you just use regular axle type grease or do you need something more fluid? Also, do you need to put this grease inside the control where the cables attach to the tube?

You can use most any lube you wish. I use motor oil. Use any plastic sandwich bag, cut off one of the bottom corners shove the end of the cable, with the end protruding, into the bag and use some electrical tape to tightly bind the plastic bag to the cable. Now tie the plastic bag to the handle bar with the cable running out of the bottom of the bag. Pour in enough oil to cover the cable and it's end and go away for at least a day.

I always use white lithium grease on the inside of the throttle grip. It stays where you put it. Ed

I'm pretty sure he's asking about the throttle tube and not the throttle cable since he mentioned it slides over the handlebars.

But that's a perfect step-by-step you posted on lubing the cable.


As far as lubing the throttle tube (commonly refered to as throttle pipe) before sliding it onto the handlebar, I've never done it and haven't had any problems, but I imagine it couldn't hurt as long as just a light coating is used.

I highly recommend that you DO lube the end of the throttle tube/pipe where it rides in a "channel" inside the handlebar control housing as well as the barrel on the end of the cable.
Standard wheel bearing grease (or better yet White Lithium grease) is fine, and just put thin coating in those areas only.

My throttle started gumming up so I went ahead and did as the guys say, a thin layer of grease and it's smooth as butter. Here is a pic from the FSM on what KZCSI was talking about in lubing cables...

While we are talking about lubing cables, I use one of these. They work great! You put the cable in this tool then insert the straw from the lube can and lube generously. It's fast and easy:)

I use the thingie Harm pictured for CABLE lubing. I have found not only does it lube the cable but it also pushes any crap out of the sheath. They are pretty cheap too. As for the throttle tube I use white graphite powder.
