I`ve never seen a factory backrest, but have been told they`re ugly as hell.I put a harley backrest on my `81LTD.I got it for $20 brand new in box on craigslist.I made a couple brackets at work+it bolted on.

A goodly number of LTD/Spectre back rests & luggage racks come up on ebay. I'm currently trying to find a luggage rack that will fit my KZ1100, but so far no luck; the LTD stuff bolts up to my bike perfectly, but won't allow the seat to open. I have an LTD rack and use it when absolutely necessary, but as soon as I find a KZ rack, the LTD rack will be for sale.
Consider setting up a search and have it email you when new items are listed. My "kawasaki luggage rack" search turns up 3-5 new items daily (mostly for the Vulcans though).
Good luck.
