I went down a tooth on my front sproket[16 to 15 i think]..its better to change the rear,but more expensive.a smaller front is harder on your chain,and sprocket.Bang for buck,this is one of the best mods to do.The bikes noticably quicker.The only downfall is higher revs at highway speed,mine went up 400rpm@65mph.To get gear ratios,simply divide the front teeth into the rear.45 divided by 16 for example.

Funny.... when my 750 was stock with the 16/38 gears, I hated it because it screamed over 5k RPM at 70 mph and it would lift the front wheel off the ground if I cranked it in low gear. First thing I did was change the rear gear to 32, suits my riding better.

leakyseal, I dropped mine front down to a 16 about 15 years ago, was way quicker on acceleration but bumped me up to 6500rpm at 70 mph. I didn't do much highway so was not concerned. Fast forward to now and am doing more highway and was tired of 2nd gear coming up way to quick. New chain and 16/42 (stock) sprockets and bike is much more comfortable and still plenty quick. Wish I had actually gone to 17 in front as still at about 5800rpm at 70 mph.

Good topic!
I was going to go to 18 at the front to get a better cruising RPM but I do not believe it will fit. Going to try a 40 on the rear to see how it works out!

The P.O. of my bike had adjusted the sprocket's sizes a bit. I wish I had thought to document what they were. As it is, I just switched them out for stock again.

I used to do almost all my riding in-town so I would run a 1 tooth smaller sprocket in the front. Now almost all my Riding is on the hiway so I now use a 1 tooth larger sprocket on the front.
You can make a larger differance in gear ratio by changing the front sprocket and still use the same chain where as if you change the rear sprocket you will prolly need to change chains also.
