Without knowing your exact model Im just going to say to remove the sprocket cover and you will see the sprocket there. There may be a safety guard by the cover with 3 10mm bolts, remove that and you may be able to slip the chain on the sprocket.

Hmm... and from the way you worded this, I have to assume you didn't replace your sprockets. I don't know if you know this, but if you put a new chain on old sprockets, it's just going to stretch it right out....

the sprokets only have 4000 miles due you really think they need to be changed? only have bike a month still rebuilding, but decided since was sitting since 88' to change chain. it seemed fimed fine just a precaution, but never even thought about the sprokets.

The sprockets should be fine, the chain was probably good as well

My bad, I assumed that you were changing the chain because of it exceeding the service limit for wear/stretch. So you're just replacing it because its rusty? That's fine... nevermind what I said about sprockets...the sprokets only have 4000 miles due you really think they need to be changed? only have bike a month still rebuilding, but decided since was sitting since 88' to change chain. it seemed fimed fine just a precaution, but never even thought about the sprokets.

If you elect to replace only the chain and not the sprockets, yes, just tie your new chain to the old one using a masterlink and pull it right around the sprocket.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
