If nothing else, always check the chain when on the bike (including passenger if that is common for you) to asure that it is not to tight when loaded as you would ride.
I don't see a noticable difference in tension on my KZ, but newer bikes with more travel and angle... could be very noticable.

I throw a ratchet strap over the seat and connect it to each side of the swing arm so I can pull the bike down until until the swing arm is parallel to the ground and the front sprocket, swing arm, and rear, sprocket form a line parallel to the ground. That is when the sprockets are the furtherest distance apart and the chain is tightest.
Sitting on the bike and adjusting it may cause the chain to be over tight when you hit a bump and the shocks compress.

I usually check when seated on the bike.
Bullseye. And roll it forward about six chain inch intervals and keep checking play. It does vary.

It states that a free play of 3/4 inch is required. But this is when bike is on a block or centerstand. I have that 3/4 inch free play.
IMHO, that's too tight. My manual says 25 - 35 mm play when it's on the stand which is about 1 - 1.4".
Be very sure to check it at many places to ensure you don't have a tight spot.

IMine says 1 - 1.4 inches also.
I tried the 3/4" adjustment and the chain felt to "tight". I put it back to the 1 1/4" setting and all is fine. I would rather have a little more play than a chain to tight and have it snap.
