z1 pitted caliper was created by twinkyrider
My son's 75 z1 has a weepy front caliper (right one of the dual stock set-up). I got a rebuild kit for it but the groove where the o-ring goes is pitted not real bad but enough. We had previously cleaned the caliper but it continued to weep. Should we go ahead and try the rebuild kit alone or can we use a very thin bead of rtv silicone in the groove , install o-ring and piston, let set for a day or two and then install the caliper and bleed? I don't think the brake fluid would interact negatively with the rtv. Has anyone tried this or seen it done or have another idea? Leery of e-bay, been burned a few times. Thanks,Pat

I don't believe brake fluid and rtv are compatable. You should look for a good used caliper through the many and various motorcycle salvage areas.

What have you done to clean out the grove? I always take a little stainless wheel on a dremel and clean it out that way. Never had a problem after cleaning.

You don't want to use any adhesive or sealer on that ring. It actually rolls a tiny bit when you apply the brake and helps the piston return when you release it.
As Don said, use a small wire wheel to clean the groove.

Advice noted w/ the rtv use, Thanks. Wire wheel, are we talking Dremel or the like? I've got one and a wire wheel, maybe I'll try that, gently. Thanks, Pat

I use a dremmel. Takes about ten seconds to clean it out. A lot cheaper and faster than buying one on ebay.
