New screws

I am begining a restro on a 75 z1 and am going to replace the screws and bolts on the engine cases and other places. I have seen the kits with the allen head screws and the phillip head. I know the allen head will hold up better to insertion and removal but the phillip head are more stock looking. What are your guys opinions on whitch style to use?

If you are going for a factory resto go with the phillips, just make sure you own or buy a screwdriver that fits the screws properly. If you are just fixing it up and don't care about it being 100% original then go with the allen head bolts.

I'd stick with the stock (Phillips) look. Actually, I believe the bits are not true Phillips but JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) You can buy these screwdirvers, but they aren't cheap. I use a SNap-on screwdriver with the replacable bits on mine. I tried Phillips bits from different vendors until I found some that are really close for each size screw. Then used a little fine file to "tune" the bits so they are a perfect fit for the screw heads. These do not booger up the heads as long as you apply steady pressure against the screw as you tighten or loosen it. It takes some patience to get the bits just right, but once it's done working on the bike is much more fun. Ed

i always use allens on any of my hotrod bikes on my stock stuff i use the standard screws. when i'm taking the philips screws out of my stock bikes i use an impact driver [snap-on makes the best one i've seen] and i don't use screw drivers i always use philips sockets i found over the years that the craftsman sockets fit the best in my opinion. the reason i use sockets is that i can put more and constant force on the screw head than with a standard screwdriver.

If you want to stick with a standard type screwdriver, I found a one at Sears about a year ago that properly fits the screws on all Japanese bikes. It's marked #3 x 6 and then underneath that 32244. It has a black soft grip handle with red inserts and it has the black hardened tip. I think I paid about C$10.00 for it. Works like a hot damn.
I agree with timebomb....SnapOn makes the best impact drivers available....but they ARE pricey.
The Japanese screw heads are not true Phillips. I believe they are a Euro design called Posi-Drive.

Thanks for the comments guys, looks like I will go back with the phillips head. I have an impact with a phillips on it that I bought to work on the 74 z1 33 years ago. It fits the screws real well and I always thought it was a #3 phillips, now I will have to investigate a little bit further . Thanks
