Help with Mag Wheel I.D.

Hello All,
I'm putting a disc mag rear wheel on my '78 KZ1000. I picked up this wheel that was on another '78, although I'm fairly certain it wasn't original to the donor.
The wheel is an 18" and looks a lot like a Z1r piece, but the disc is not drilled. Also, it is a tube type rim complete with bead locks.
Does anyone out there recognize this wheel's original application?
(Please disregard the square head bols in the disc mounting holes. They're only there as plugs before bead blasting)

i would say Z1R or later 79-80 kz,i think ltds all had 16" wheels.:whistle: goodluck,happy wrenching!

you know, I was reading through som old stuff. At this point I'm not ruling out KZ650 or the 750 twins.

did 650s have 18" mag with disc brake?im used to 900s and 1000s,try sliding your axle from 1000 in there ,i think 650 has differant sized bearings:whistle: goodluck,happy wrenching!oops no bearings in that wheel:whistle:

You can measure the bearing bore and then look at the bearing reference in the Filebase section to determine the bearing bore for a 1000 (750 twin is the same) and see if it will fit.
The only chain drive twin that had mags stock was the 80 G model, and it was a 16". And Wireman is right about the 650 having a smaller rear axle.

The 77 650 C had mags with discs. They were tube-type with bead locks (2 bead locks if I recall). I believe the rear was 18". I would assume the 78 650 C model had the same. If the axle is the same as your 1000, then I guess it aint from a 650, or can different bearings make up the difference?

That's good info.
I have the bearings out right now, but they did fit a KZ1000 axle. However, that could've been a bearing swap.
The wheel had definitely been worked on before because there was a 42 tooth sprocket on it and the seals were banged up a bit.

Sorry, I don't mean to hijack the thread or anything, but how does a bead lock work? This sort of thing is from before my time, and I'd like to know because the front mag on my LTD is a tube type I think. The 16" out back is tubeless.

It's like a piece of metal strap with a bolt welded in the center that sticks up through a hole in the center of the rim and has a nut that you tighten to pinch the bead of the tire between it and the edge of the rim.
It's used on the rear on some tube type rims.
It keeps the tire from spinning on the rim and ripping the valve stem off the tube.
