Putting a slug, or spacer on top of your springs will stiffen the fork compression up. You will only be able to put so much in there before you wouldn't be able to get the fork cap back on though. To lower the ride height, you can take the fork tubes apart and place a spacer underneath the spring you will find on the lower tube inside the fork leg. You can buy these in 1", 2" or 3" and they will lower your ride height by that amount. People have made these out of pipe cut to length and even PVC tube. Anything rigid or hard enough to rwithstand the load. Or you can use H2 fork tubes from the earlier models. Not sure if they are all as short but the 72 model fork tubes are about 1 1/2" shorter. I have them on my bikes so I can reach the ground better.

You could just drop 650 springs in 1000 tubes...drops the front end about two inches (I know this because I acquired an entire 1978 KZ1000A2 front end (w/650 springs in it) and installed it on my KZ1000A1...didn't like it and replaced the springs w/the original 1000 springs).

Doing that will stiffen things up, but you have to watch how much you cut or you could run into problems bottoming out the forks/binding the springs.

Check this out, I think it describes exactly what you are trying to do.
