new wheels on a shaftie was created by high toned son of a bitch
Hello all,
I am cleaning up my 1000st for this spring, and painting the frame and body.
I would like to get a different set of wheels for it. What is the interchangablity on the shaft wheels? Anything from any other bikes fit?
Thakns,
Mike

I doubt you will swap. The front has fairly unique brakes and not sure if you could swap another wheel and mount the rotors but it MIGHT be possible to swap the front. The rear wheel has a unique caliper and caliper mount and the rear drive type wheel is specific for a shaft bike. You could probably swap a 79 for an 80 or vise versa but no other 73-80 wheel will fit on the rear. I am not sure about newer KZs... like 80s vintage with shafts. They MIGHT swap but I am guessing you will have problems mounting the rear brake.

I have never seen any other wheels to fit the shafties, but your wheels can be widened if that's what your looking for. I had Kosman do a wheel for me and it came out nice. Check them out at www.kosmanracing.com/weldup.htm This is definitely not cheap though!!

I like the mags, just kinda looking for something different. I wasn't sure if wheels off of another shaft drive bike would work. Even if it wasn't a Kaw. I figured as many different shaft bikes there are out there, maybe some of the wheels would interchange.

How about having them chromed? Has anyone chromed a cast mag wheel?
Thanks,
Mike

The next step for me after having the wheels widened is to have them chromed. I have heard that the plater really needs to know what they are doing to get them right. Wheels are tough to do from what I hear. The cheapest price I have found is chrome pros plating. They also have a very good warranty, so that's probably where I'll try. There are a lot of places that do chrome wheel exchanges now, but they don't have the old KZ wheels that we need. I'll be watching this thread to see if anyone knows of a good place.

I'll post a pic in the next thread.

That looks great!!! If aftermarket wheels or a swap is not available, that would be the next step. Sweet :woohoo:

OK,
looking on evilbay I saw a 80's Kaw bike called the z1000 eliminator. Pretty sweet ride, happens to be shaft drive, and awesome wheels I'd love to have on my ride. ANybody know if these wheels would work?
Thanks,
Mike

ZL900/ZL1000 have a wider wheel and tire than the KZ1000ST....
doubt it would fit without a wider swingarm
