Will soon be installing a polymer gel insert in my seat, and got to talking with a co-worker who has an upholstery business on the side. As we all know, Armour-all is not the best thing for seats, dashes, tires, etc. A couple of tips he shared:

  • Transmission fluid to clean and restore the vinyl seat cover and bring back the lustre (or a vinyl car or boat top, dashboard, etc., as it will not dry it out like Armour-all)
  • A grinder with 24 grit sandpaper to shape or mold the foam.
  • Use a hair dryer to help soften the seat cover when stretching it back on.

  • Any comments/opinions from experience? Thanks. B)

Not sure, as I haven't tried it yet. Just curious if anyone has heard of it?

I'd recommend getting rid of the foam and replacing with rebond while you're in there.

    replacing with rebond

Never heard the term rebond. TWT, is that a type of foam? Haven't taken the seat off yet, as I am still snowmobiling. I would imagine that a 28 year old seat would be getting hardened or brittle. Will see when I get there. Thanks.

When I shaped my seat I used the electric carving knife (turkey cutter, dont tell my wife) and a belt sander. I did mine while it was warm outside so I didnt really have to worry about getting it warm to stretch it, but mine needs more than stretching to get the fit it should have (on the long to do list) but I can say that the hairdryer would be a good idea. If your friend say tranny fluid then I guess Id give it a try, in a small spot first. Maybe someone else here with an old extra seat can give it a shot? Id think that it would turn your pants red no matter how well you rub it in.
