Back when Lawson raced his and the factory came out with the 1/4 fairing the objective was to give the racers something to tuck in behind and improve the air-flow around the rider. The discovery was that the air pressure along with the air turbulence caused varying pressures to the steering (through the fairing which was mounted to the triples)...which caused designers to gravitate towards the frame-mounted fairings. Lawson, Rainey and the rest took the fairings off their race bikes and installed number-plates where the fairing would be (often - not always - in front of oil coolers, mounted to the frame). Today such problems are aleviated by technological advances in frames, suspension, and tires (so ZRXs can maintain "the" look w/o negative side effects).
Consider the Japanese race series where the old-school superbikes such as the Z1Rs and the Wes Cooley's race. These motors are highly modified big-bores that crank out well in excess of 150bHp (well in excess) and they are always in braced frames, modified (beefed up) suspensions, and the fairings are mounted to the frames.
There have been several articles on it; 'Motorcycle Classic' or 'Classic Motorcycle' or some vintage-type of magazine had a big write up on it a few years back. I'm not at home at the moment to dig it out, but the racers all took the (fork mounted) fairings off b/c of what they did to the handling at higher speeds.
...just a thought.

That is a very good point about the fairings. I will have to study that a bit more. I will obviously not remove the fairing, so I will have to see what could be happening.
I was thinking that a steering damper might solve your problem; this way you can keep the fairing...and YEAH, don't get rid of that fairing, your bike is too good lookin' to go messing with looks that you have spent that sort of time in perfecting.

I've gone that route on an older KZ and it worked out really nicely...the bike is gone now, but it was good. The earlier KZ frames are different than J/GPz eras but still the concept is the same. I would think that a J or GPz rear wheel would likely bolt right up.
Again, just my .02-of-a-dollar...I'm a big fan of what you have done to your bike. Great stuff!
