Another Vulcan shock question was created by apbling
First off, I want apologize if I am asking a repeat question, but I was not able to find my exact issue on the forum...
So, I have an 82 550 LTD. I go 235ish and the wife is about 120. I still have the stock shocks on the bike. They do ok, but once in a while we'll bottom the shocks out if we hit a large bump.
I'd like to lower the bike a tad, but I am concerned with bottoming out. If I went with a shorter Vulcan 500 shock, would it be a bit stiffer than my current ones to avoid bottoming out? I am starting to think maybe I should just poney up and get the progressive ones, but they sure aren't cheap.

I have a couple of pairs of 500 Vulcan shocks mounted on my 650's and I like them. As to the weight carrying capacity I can't say. My best suggestion to you would be to look for a pair from a Vulcan 750/800, they are the same length but have the added features of adjustable dampening and air assist, which I think will give you what you are looking for. They generally sell for a few bucks more on ebay than the 500's do but still much less than the progressives would cost.

Whatever shocks are fitted, it's a good idea to assure when bottomed out that tire doesn't hit underside of rear fender, where it will likely obliterate wiring routed underneath the fender.

Do you think the 750/800 would bolt up with no mods? Dare I say could I get a pair of shocks off a different metric bike? I would go with the sporty shocks, but I'd prefer not to mod them too much.
