90 Weight Gear/Chain Oil was created by jonnygorman
Have an '81 kz750 ltd. Cylmer manual says to use 90 weight gear oil. My chain is an o-ring chain, but o-rings are pretty much gone. I plan to change it in the next while but have been unknowingly been running without it for some time. Will 90 weight gear oil throw itself all over me while riding? Will it provide the proper lube with no
o-rings left in the chain? Are there any better recommendations out there?
Thanks
Jon

Yes.
Probably.
Yes.
Any of the modern spray lubes will be less messy. PJ1 Black label is pretty good. I like DuPont Dry Teflon spray. The o-rings are there to keep the grease inside the rollers, and water and crud out of them. Without the o-rings, I'd bet the chain will be toast pretty quickly.

Try the Dupont multi-purpose teflon spray lube in the blue can from Lowes. I absolutely love the stuff. Goes on wet to penetrate then dries and leaves a waxy coating. Works great. Are there any better recommendations out there?
Thanks

I've been using Liquid Wrench Cycle Chain Lube in the blue can - I like it. It goes on wet but kinda dries to a nice film. My neighbor used 90W gear oil, so I felt his chain to see what the residue was like: it seemed virtually identical to the film left behind by the LW Cycle lube... kinda interesting.
PS: I tried PJ1 black label heavy duty chain lube - I hate that stuff. It makes a mess coming out of the can & makes a mess on the chain & is harder to clean off than other stuff I've used... your results may vary.

I use Maxima Chain Wax after having tried a bunch of different lubes. You can get it at any motorcycle shop. here's what it looks like:
