if the shock bodies are mounted to the frame they are sprung weight,if they are mounted to the swingarm they are unsprung weight.it is best to keep the unsprung weight as low as possible to allow the suspension to be able to keep the tires in contact with the road as much as possible.kinda the same reason you want the lightest weight wheels possible.sometimes it is not possible to get the body end of the shock mounted to the frame.on my z1r due to the fact that i have a big wheel and tire i dont have the clearance to turn the shock upside down as then the coils would hit my sprocket and chain.
hth,
leon
Can you flip piggy back shocks? Is there anything in them with oil or otherwise that wouldn't do well upside down?

the snow machine shocks is a good idea...how do they handle the road?
They work nicely just as they come. The springs are straight rate, but are in the correct range, somewhere in the middle of the progressive springs that come on the ohlins bike shocks. I have them on a 550 and they are a little on the stiff side. Damping is also firm. They would be fine on a larger bike.
I did a quick search on ebay and didnt see any of the model that I got for sale currently, but there are usually some on there
