lithium grease for a o-ring chain. was created by gcarson64
i have some lithium grease laying oround and i was wondering if it is safe to use it on a o-ring chain. if it is ok then is it better than normal grease.

Likely a big mess, and no better than normal grease.
Suggest using the excellent inexpensive spray teflon lube from Lowes.
Good Fortune!

O ring chains are shipped with lithium grease on them to prevent rust. First thing I did was clean it off and spray on the stuff just above this post....

I use the PJ1 Blue label clear chain lube.
Sprays on easy and stays clear and fairly clean.

I like the Liquid Wrench cycle chain lube, but it may not be available any more. It's cheap & seemed to be readily available at various stores... not any more though, what a drag. LW still makes a chain lube, but I haven't tried it to see if it's the same as the stuff for motorcycles.

I tried a bunch of products over the years and I prefer Maxima Chain Wax. Ed

Everyone has their favorite lube. PJ1 is great if you don't mind replacing your chain ever 5000 miles:angry:. I've never tried any of those others except the dry lube. I wouldn't recommend it. I had a new Yamaha WR250R last winter and rather than cleaning oil off it I used the dry. The chain was noticably wearing in <600 miles. I use BG chain lube you can get at Napa, most likely have to order it, however as to the original question, on my beloved KZs that I don't want to get dirty with normal chain lubes I have used lithium grease. All you have to do is smear it on a dozen or so rollers and it distributes to the rest. Minimal mess and works fine. No need to overdo the grease. Lithium wipes right off unlike the factory grease, very little fling anyway, but what is there is no big deal to clean.

I'm sold on the Dupont Teflon shown above. It's all I used on an RK x-ring 530 chain that I run on my 650. This chain has 30,000 miles on it, and is just starting to make some noise so I'm going to replace it and the sprockets soon. I never expected to get this much life from it, and most of those miles are stop-n-go commuting miles. The chain needed 3 adjustments in that mileage.
