I replaced my chain and sprockets about 3 years ago,and only have about 5-6,000 miles on them.Sunstar sprockets and an RK O-ring chain. 630 series....
After cleaning and lubing, if chain soon re-kinks, it's likely needs replacing. However, with decent maintenance. should have lasted longer than 5-6000 miles.
After cleaning chain, try dousing it with this inexpensive product from Lowes.
Lube anytime, but most effective when the chain is warm after a ride.
