Can anyone tell me if the speedometer cable is interchangeable between a 1978 and a 1981 Kz 650? The one on my 78 is broke and my buddy has a 81 parts bike that I could have.

If you go to the Dennis Kirk website and do a search for the speedo cable for your bike, once you find it there is a link that says something like "See all models this part fits" and you can tell if any others will work.

I'm out of Illinois. It looks to me like the cables are different between the years I mentioned. Thanks for the responses guys.

No, they will not swap. Only the 77,78 and 79 speedo cables can switch. This also includes speedo cables off the 78 and 79 750 LTD twin.

I ended up just ordering one off of Dennis Kirk. It was only $14.95 so I didn't think that was too bad.

seems expensive - i replaced all the cables on my kz650 and i think the most expensive cable was the clutch cable at $13 - the speedo cable was about $10.

ive looked at dk before for parts and many of their parts are very expensive.
