Shouldered vs Non-Shouldered Rims? was created by DoctoRot
OK, so this may be a total newbie question, but do certain tires need a shouldered rim? I understand the physical difference between a shouldered and non-shouldered rim, but I cant seem to find out if one is better than the other, or if tires are made specifically for one or the other. As far as I can tell, shouldered rims are mostly used for a vintage look. I"m looking to get some new rims, and want to fit the Bridgestone BT45 on them, do i need a shouldered rim for this? went to Bridgestone's site and it says nothing about shouldered or non-shouldered.

Are you refering to Akront style flanged/shouldered rims ?

If so, no you do not need shouldered rims to run BT45's
Shouldered rims do give a classic look but have no other advantage over non shouldered rims. If anything they are heavier and much more awkward to keep clean/polished.

Ok, so I ended up calling Buchanan's Spokes and shouldered rims are just for looks. I read something in another thread about how a shouldered rim was needed to properly seat the tire, apparently it doesn't matter.

Is this what you mean by a shouldered rim?

I believe it is either a D.I.D. or a Buchanan's Sun Rim. I think it was stock on the 82 KZ650 CSR. I do like the look of it. Front matches. The guy I took it to did not like the back tire and rim locks one bit when mounting a new Bridgestone.

youre thinking of a tubed vs tubeless mag wheel.
the ribs on a mag wheel are inside where bead of tire seats onto rim on a tubeless rim B)

The way the lady on the phone at Buchanan's broke it down for me was that Excel offers both shouldered and non-shouldered rims, the only difference being looks because both will need a tube. Apparently back in the day a "shoulder" was added to the inside edge of the rim to give the rim extra strength. But I am definitely no expert.:P
