What brake do I have? was created by KZCM
1980 KZ1000E2 shaft and I have the rear disc torn down. I ordered new piston seals and dust boots from Z1 and thought I'd received the wrong dust boots as they were too small. So, I ordered some from Redline and they were the same size. At this point I really doubt both of these folks would send the wrong part so the next conclusion is that my bike has something other than what's supposed to be on it. The picture is what came off the bike and what I received from both Z1 and Redline. The larger boot on the right is what came off the brake. Any ideas?

Would measure size of the caliper piston which might be 42mm instead of 38mm.

Z1E likely also carries the larger size.

Good Fortune! :)

You're right, it needs to be measured prior to ordering (see Z1E note):

Oddly though the piston and seal was changed the dust seal was never noted as different. That doesn't mean though that it isn't, measure the OD of the piston to be sure.

Looks like I reversed myself on the picture description since the larger dust boot is on the left - not right. Anyway. . . .The piston is a 42mm. Both Z1E and Redline sent the correct size piston seal so that's no problem. But the dust seal is still too small.

KZ_Rage, are you saying when they went to a larger piston, everyone forgot about the need to make a larger dust boot?

No I'm sure the dust boot changed as well, it is just that there is no mention of a new part number for the dust boot. I can't even tell if the change in piston and seal was for the 38mm vs 42mm versions. Kaw is not the best for this info unless you happened to work for them back then maybe.

If you have the 42mm piston and your dust seal is for the 38mm then contact Jeff at Z1 about the kit coming in with the wrong dust seal in it.

I sent them an email last week but haven't received a response yet. My job has me traveling 400 miles away with very limited access to internet so follow up is sometimes difficult. But, I'll follow up with a phone call this week. I sure would like to get this brake reassembled sometime soon! Ironically, the parts from Redline were short one of the piston seals. I guess I'll just concentrate on something else for awhile. There's still plenty of parts left to refurbish!
