Z1 front wheel on a KZ?

What goes in to running a Z1 front wheel on a KZ 900? Do I need to swap the fork lowers in addition to getting the speedo hardware?

I thought that they were the same?

No I don't think so- different axels and speedo drives, etc.

I'm wondering if an assembled Z1 wheel fits in KZ lowers.

I know that Kawi used two sizes of axles I am not sure what the transitions were. Just change the bearings in the wheel to match your axle and spedo drive.

I just put new bearings in my Z1 front wheel, but I don't think anything else will swap over. Look at a Clymers manual if you've got one- two completely different schematics for the front wheels.

Will Z1 lowers work on KZ forks?

Z1 (1973-1975) front fork lowers and spindle is different from the KZ900/KZ1000's. I switched to KZ650 lowers, KZ900 damper rods, and '73 Z1-900 fork tubes with Progressive springs on my '73 Z1-900 because I wanted to use a Telefix front fork brace.

Bet KZ forks will work with Z1 lowers, but the Z1 damper rods leave much to be desired.

My predicament is that I have a pair of Lester wheels with a Z1 front hub. I need to mount them on my KZ900 in 10 days before I ride 8,000 miles to Alaska and back. I have the wheel (tire mounted and balanced), just installed new bearings, and rotors.

What's the best course of action?
