79 KZ1000 ST E1 polished side of valve cover marks

The polished 4 areas of the side of my valve covers left side looks like someone tried to clean them with a wire brush. Should this look this way, if not what can I polish them out with.... They are deeper then just using a cloth.

Could try using finer and finer sandpaper. Starting with say a 150 grit, and working your way toward a 400 (or more) wet sand. And then following it up with a polishing bit on a dremel for good measure.

those marks will need a good sanding off then finer and finer..then polish the square covers are harder imo and take some patience ,that is why mine are half done :blink:

kzboy those are the rare and elusive woodgrain covers , cherry stain is definitely the proper restoration technique . just kidding . ive had luck with this procedure . 240 , 320,500 for ultra clean satin sheen , then 800, 1000 and polish with wheel and stainless green tripoli stick or some mothers aluminium polish for the bling bling . just rub with old tee shirt by hand is good with the mothers aluminium polish just keep useing a clean place on the rag . once your finished you'll be very impressed.

I just hit it with some 360 grit wet and it already took out the marks and then hit it with some mothers. But I will find some 500 and 800 grit to really get it looking good!

After you get most of the groves out you can use a bench polisher (aka: bench grinder with polishing wheels on it) with some brown and white polishing sticks.

Yeah but I'll probably die early from aluminum oxide "black lung"! Seriously it is a very dirty job, slings black aluminum/polishing bar goop everywhere. Also be aware that the part sometimes likes to catch on the wheel and will try to launch across the room if you are not careful. You have to use a Dremel for some of the tight spots the big wheel can't get into very well. You can even use the wheel by itself to get deep drop gouges out (see photo attached of wife's learner bike cover). Good luck!
