Fork/Motor Oil/ATF

The nearest store which sells fork oil is a 45 minute drive away so I wanted to know if I could use ATF or motor oil. I know this has come up several times and I have looked at the archives but nobody seems to give a clear answer if motor oil or ATF will deteriorate or harm the seals or the forks?

Nope, won't harm the seals or the forks, may not work as well though. No harm in trying it, and if it don't suit you, you can always change it later.
