Thanks guys. I wouldn't doubt the PO mixed and matched parts. It would not be the first silly "fix" I have found.
Interesting kawasaki.com says a D2 rear sprocket is 40T. Because mine FSM says it is 41T, which is what I have and it appears to be in great condition.
I'm going to take some more measurements and get on the phone with Z1 monday.

Final reduction ratio = 2.56(41/16)
Overall drive ratio= 5.81(@top gear)
