which are heavier, cast or wire wheels?

Specifically newer GSXR type 3 spoke cast wheels or stock 18/19" wire wheels? From those who have done suspension/wheel swaps.

I would say that the 19/18" wire wheel combo will be heavier considering they use steel spokes and a steel rim and only an aluminum hub. Where as the 17/17" all aluminum combo should be lighter.

What particular year of GSXR are you asking about. I have a '95 Gsxr750 front rim and a 'Busa rear rim as well as a set of 19/18" spoked Kz rims. I could try measuring them for you if I have time tonight.

Thanks Doug, Any help would be much appreciated. Im eventutally going to monoshock my bike and front end swap. Saving my pennies/working any available overtime. I was just getting some info together and that was a nagging question of mags vs. spokes debate in my head. I love the look of wire wheels on bikes, especially like on the Ducati sport classic and Trimph thruxton. But loosing some pork wouldnt be a bad thing either especially in the unsprung area.

Old school mags are heavier than spoked wheels. But like you, I think the look of spokes is great!

Well, I was going to weigh the wheels for you until I realized I don't have a scale. I swore I did, but I have no idea where it went to.

The post office will have a very accurate scale, you can prolly just go there and use it... if they complain, tell them you are planning to ship the wheels.

I'm am guessing the newer GSXR wheels are lighter than the stock steel spoked wheels. They are hollow, unlike the old solid mags.

The 70's mag wheel I have is pretty heavy, I would swear it weighs close to the same as the entire GSXR front end on my bike now.

I love the look of spoke wheels too. You could have a custom wheel laced up with stainless spokes, an aluminum rim and hub. Like a Talon/Excel combo. It would be light and look super trick!
