So guys those of you that have aftermarket brake lines, how did you run them? two straight lines going from the master or did you do the stock way going to the splitter?

im interested in upgrading the lines

1978 kz650 sr- long time project/first bike mostly gone

Both 650s combined to make one great bike! with a new powerplant

it is a 79 frame, 78 front end, both 78 wheels and brakes, 78 body work and a 80' 750-4 motor with gpz 750 cams and a kerker and...

Simple, they sell them by the inch.
Banjo fittings in all different angles.
bolt em on and use whatever length you want, they screw together.

I ran two lines from the master to the calipers, got rid of that stupid splitter.

But I also have a later model master cylinder with the brake light switch.

noticed when looking online the fittings have different sizes AN4 10mm etc... how do I know what is what for a KZ almost ordered some then wasn't sure. The angles are easy just not sure about the fitting sizes

I got rid of the splitter. For years I ran two lines from the master. But for the last few years I've been running a single line from the master to the right caliper, then a second line from the right caliper to the left caliper. Performance and feel wise, I can't tell the difference. But the routing is neater, and it may use a tad less tubing. The pads still wear the same amount on both sides.

I used all stuff from Earls. It's been about 10 years or so, but the part numbers may be the same. They warn not to use aluminum fitting for brakes. Only steel. The aluminum is much weaker.

I used their Speed Flex, -3 hose, .040" wall, with clear coat, 10 feet: 6100031ERL

Stock banjo height was 10mm. I used their .425" which is 10.8mm:
Straight: 600703ERL
30 degree: 600803ERL

Aluminum crush washers, 10mm: 177100ERL

Extra -3 olives: 699030ERL

Always get a few extra olives and washers.


Whatever you get, it is better to get all of the parts at the same place, and make sure the fittings are designed for the type of hose you are using. (There seem to be an infinite number of hose and fitting types. It's probably best to call the place and talk to someone with experience, as they will know what works with what.

Can't say for stock master & splitter combo. In my build, due to ZX636 front end and master w/dual disk rotors, got rid of the splitter all together and went straight from master to right side caliper (w/longer banjo) and small brake line over to left caliper.... Pretty much the same config as the ZX configurations.

I converted my single disc front to dual. The splitter was included with all the other brake parts I got on Ebay so I polished it and used it. I got an Ebay Ninja master cylinder for dual disc use too.

I found that bleeding the brakes was a pain, but once I got it to firm up, there is plenty of stopping power. The key to bleeding the last of the air was to get it off the center stand and give it a lean to let the stubborn bubbles to come up to the top.

My concern with running 2 lines from the MC was that the outlet on the Ninja MC was directed toward the headlight rather than out the front and 2 banjo fittings would've been a tight fit with drag bars.

The single line down to one caliper and the hop over to the other is an interesting thought. I've seen it on modern bikes, but didn't cross my mind when I did the conversion a couple years ago.
