raking the frame

I have been working on a buddy of mine's kz1000. its 1200cc's, welded crank, forged pistons, and a well built head on nitrous. The drag header leaves very little room from the front wheel. Hes looking to have it raked. Anybody know what a typical dragbike rake degree is? What kind of shop should do it? I live in SD so speedshops and such are few and far between. Is this something an average machine/welding shop could do? Im also considering doing this on my gs1100e. Stock frontends usually used after raking?

Not sure I'd let just any shop take a whack at it. Some shops might be able to do it, but someone with experience with a frame jig is where I'd head.

They will no what to do. Cut the neck off and put some pieces into it!

there is a few dirt track race chassis builders around but the one close by is not interested. and the local shop that does truck frame repairs said that its too much of a liability. There is a chopper builder in sioux falls, sd that i contacted and am awaiting a reply

There is a lot more to it than just cut the neck out and add some pieces. I'll elaborate more this evening

stock gs1100 e's tend to corner/handle like an occ chopper in stock form with their weird ass steering geometry! :sick: :woohoo:
3 degrees is about id suggest for a street bike myself,if you can wait till i finish my project in kearney ill come up there to brookings and help you if the frame is already stripped down

well i can have the frame stripped in about an hour haha. The GS needs to be raked just enough to keep the header off of the pipe. A full dragbike rake is kinda what im looking for. It will be an occasional strip bike, but will also be on the street but dont plan on doing any fast cornering maneuvers. It will have a 6-8" over arm on it by the end of winter.

once you get much over 3 degrees of extra rake on a kz frame for a streetbike it will start to handle even worse than that gs1100. :woohoo:
if you plan on doing anything radical with an 82 or older gs1100e i stronger suggest getting the crank worked on.
id rather take my chances with a stock unwelded kz1000 crank with a low boost turbo than to hotrod around town on a stock 82 1100e with an untouched crank,yeah ive had my share of handling/bad crank issues with the 1100 suzuki! :sick: :woohoo:
as far as 6" on a streetbike swingarm once you get much past 3-4" over you start moving weight away from the back tire then youre stuck with a 170-180 tire to make up for lost traction,but then youre adding extra weight and chain issues,shock issues................
my 80ltd/z1 1327 mutt ran pretty consistant 6.17-6.18 times in the 1/8 with an unraked frame and a 3" over arm and a small tire without a bar,1st 100' usually involved lots of praying(and my pacemaker bouncing off its rev limiter :sick: )but i had plenty of motor to make it up on the top side! :laugh:

Why stop there?

once you rake it that far and lenthen it that far a simple manuver such as pulling in traffic from a side street is a chore. i rode the bike in my user pic on the street and never again. you will use a full lane on the highway going around slight bends in the highway.The bike im building now has a 4 degee rake and a 3 over arm.And its just slighty slugish in the handleing compared to a stocker.

Well how many degrees of rake are on the first bike, the one in ur picture
