I changed out the ball bearings for tapered bearings. I have some up and down movement with the fork ears that holds the headlight in place. I bought the 41-6244 all balls bearing kit which is the same as 22-1014 just different distributor #'s. So..has anyone used a shorter or less thick bearing like a 30x52x16. The races are in flush and even. I have a kz1000 '78 A2A with all the caps and rubber gskt for the fork ear trim. And I still have up and down play. Is there suppose to be a little play when switching to tapered bearings?
Im running a Kz1000 B2 LTD FRAME not A2A frame

Oops im running a 1978 kz1000 B2 LTD. I believe they had a headlight bracket. Im wondering if the neck was slightly different. I took the fork ears and trim off a 78kz1000 A2A. Could that be it?

If your lover triple is properly tight in a neck you are half way done.To have your ears firmer, you have to loose forks on lower triple and pull it out a bit.Upper triple have that role to hold ears firm and ofcourse forks have to be even with top triple.Does not if you are using some aftermarket, but it is not biggy.Or maybe you added extra washer or thicker washer on the neck nut ,so top triple can not press down enough. Hope it helps.
