I am stripping this bike down and I'm glad I did as taking off the rear suspension today I saw that there was nothing holding top of the suspension spring on as the mounting bolt is stripped of thread.
Best solution?

guess you can use a die set on them to cut new threads

It might be a M8 X 1.25 thread, but check first before trying to re-thread it.

Someone found that those are threaded into the frame on a smaller bike. This question has never been answered on here since I first saw it asked about ten years ago. Are they threaded into the frame or pressed or welded? Hmmmm the world may never know.

one option is to cut the threaded end off and leave the straight shank.then drill and tap the shank and use a bolt and flat washer,or custom countersunk washers and cap head screw.

yeah theres not really a lot of pressure on the nut holding the shock on top mount,id be will to bet you could damn near ride around with about the top nut for quit a while without the shock really noticing unless you were laying into some really hard corners B)

ok, maybe I'm missing this but here goes anyways.

Re-thread for the nut is truly only keeping the shock from slipping off it's top mount.
Hell, you could even drill a whole in the thread, with a couple washers and a large cotter pin secure your top shock in place.

As mentioned, using a die, re-thread and you'll be fine.

I would do it. Re-thread, get back everything, and drill through the nut to other side. One shiny cotter pin and everybody is happy!

thanks for your suggestions people.
just so i don't F this up:
I have had a good look at this over the holidays and the thread is totally gone - the front half of the thread is missing and the diameter of the bolt is about 1-2mm less than it should be.
so
option 1 rethread
I can rethread it but seeing as there is almost no good thread will it still be possible. Also the way a die works won't it not be able to cut thread right the back of the bolt (where it's most needed) as the larger shank will get in the way? so if someone could clarify if it is possible to rethread in this situation that would be great.
pros: easy
cons: is it possible
option 2 chop and cut thread into shank
would be to chop the threaded section completely off and drill into the larger diameter section (that the shock actually sits on) "shank" and then use a tap to thread this hole. Then use a bolt and oversized washer to stop the shock slipping off.
pros: neater
cons: more work
apologies if i am reiterating stuff but just want to make sure i have it clear in my head before i start hacking ;)
