I know there are a lot of you guys that have done some serious mods on your bikes. I am going to be doing my kz all myself this time and I was thinking that the task of modding safely is not any task to be taken lightly. There should be stickies of worthwhile projects up for others to make easier their life while trying to mod. Sharing the knowledge, you know?
Was thinking of USD forks, custom 3inch swingarm, motorwork, wiring, powdercoating, and really nice light wheels (saw a set on a zrx that looked exactly like the ltd wheels but probably light years lighter than the old ones) but trying as best as possible to keep the bike to looking stock or using mods that keep the lines of the original bike yet using the best parts. For example, I am not looking to mod my bike to look like a half breed new bike that was an after thought instead of well thought out. I don't want my bike to look less than a kz and more like a plastic bike minus the fairing.
Is there anyone out there that sell kits for the trees that would be a bolt up or am I just having a lucid dream in that no one is really selling these parts to mod these old dogs any more. I really liked that basani pipe and the lockhart oil cooler that drains to the bottom and not on top as to block the turn radius of the trees.
I guess if it were easy to do more people would do it but I really have the money and the patience to attempt a serious build to make this bike in to a modern day streetbike that runs and handles great in comparison to the original. I know most people stretch em and run em in the quaarter mile and don't worry about handling yet I would love to have a bike that I could ride in the mountaings all day long and not worry about overheating or touching hard parts when I corner hard.

You may want to try the "Search" function. It is much improved over the old version making things a lot easier to find. Ed

Part of the problem I have seen with all of these is that they are somewhat different depending on the donor parts. That said, those who have done it could easily state what the donors are and what it took them to do (realizing that given the same components individuals may tackle the swaps in different manners).

Havent seen to many talk about the handling of their frankenstiens, I can see some have tried to consider all issues, while others mod for looks only,

Well there's other variables to consider where new technology blows away the old such as the braking systems. Bottom line, truly no comparison.

Then there's suspension technology where all the settings can be "Tuned" to the riders preference.
Not only is the ideal for the guys that do indeed twist it up but for new riders as well.

We also have newer electronic ignition, lighting for brighter viewing and to be seen, more accurate measurement devices such as speedo, tachometers, A/FR, Volt/Amp gauges etc... that can be added.

Now knowing Larry (Sax), most likely he will have a P&P head with performance camshafts.... Oh wait now, he will also require some newer technology carbies to go with that new head... Oh yeah and only assumption on my part but he won't be using OEM 1015cc pistons... Naw at the least 1075cc 10.5:1 pistons.... Oh hell, 4-4 exhaust, naw...

Long story short, it's what trips your trigger as for performance vs aesthetics vs riding styles. B)

Just out for a cruise, daily rider, not into twisting her up much, fairly flat non populated roadways then stock re-build is just fine, nothing wrong with that and anyone who knows the KZ series will simply drool over your build with a huge smile on their face while reminiscing a young mans life and encounter with the KZ.

For the adrenalin junkies who do twist these old girls up pushing themselves and KZ's to the limit, well then the newer technology is a must just for safety alone.

Ok, enough of the blah-blah Sax, what you have in mind in this build?
And we demand picture mi amigo.... :woohoo:
