with that said I also know I have ridden on baloney rinds and my current tires are who knows? they show their age anyway I am sure the cheapest tire on the market today is probably better quality and engineered than the best tire that was produced in 1978
I have researched tires some I have never heard of that have good reviews and some I have heard of with not so decent reviews. my local dealer has a rack of clearance tires that are new with really old production dates as old as 2007 and 2008 his prices are discounted about 40% for the comparable quote new tire 2010/2011 date
which brings me to the names I have never heard of are about the price of the old age clearance tires with my pending layoff around the corner and funds being what they are I am forced into making a decision for the short term put a new no name tire or a clearance tire on my bike at least for now.
I hope to replace whatever I choose by summer but I need to get things going and a tire seems to be putting me in the holding pattern for progress on my build
new no name? or new old mfg date?? any input would be greatly appreciated

It depends on how they were stored till now at the dealer or wherever they have been till now also. But we only have 2 of them underneath versus 4 on the car. You don't want any of them blow out. I would definitely go with new tires rather NOS.
TIRE AGE: Motorcycle tires should not be used after five years from date of manufacture. Tires contain Volitile Organic Compounds (VOC's) which help keep the rubber flexible and grippy; as tires age, the VOC's leach out. Certain conditions can accelerate this process, including extremely hot and excessively humid or dry environments, parking on certain forms of man-made carpeting, certain molds & mildew forms (which may accelerate or even cause what is commonly known as "dry rot"), as well as overheating the tires due to low tire pressure or hard use.

it is my understanding the 55 is a little taller the 55 is not the tire style I want and is more expensive the 50 is a little less expensive and the style i want.
my original setup thinking was a 190/55 1with a 40/18 gearing on a 78 kz1000 with zx6 swingarm
will i need a different front or rear if i run a 190/50 or is this still a good staring point?

I don't think you will notice much difference with the 5% increase in aspect ratio. That being said, Go wit what you want. I have made the mistake of settling for "something else" and usually look back and wish I had done it the other way. Just my 2 cents.
