I know it's an old topic. Now it's my turn to figure it out.
I have a 1976 KZ 900 with frame # Z1F 504746 it was powdercoated when I got it, so no Man date on the white sticker? He had a different engine on it.
But said you have the original engine also.
This is the engine # Z1E 097335. I know this was the transition time, some bikes were built in Lincoln, NE. some in Japan
I would like to know if this is a match. I will eventually sell this project, Am trying to assemble all the original parts together. Have frontend, complete back wheel assembly. Getting the orig. swingarm powdercoated to match the frame. Took off the Suki swingarm. I'll pull this engine off if the other is the right one.
This one on the bike is Z1E #096548 with bored holes to 78mm and a welded crank
I have this #097335 one sitting in the hall.
After all this I am more confussed now.
I am just trying to find the correct engine for this frame.
Maybe neither are correct?
Thanks for any V.I.N. and engine # info.
Marty

I really dont know if after 75 there really is a way to match up any engine number with a frame number? After 75 I only know of the letter in a particular engine number gives reference to what model bike it was in. D, G , stuff like that.
I would like to hear if anybody knows more?

If not already done, could try zedder for range of frame and engine numbers on 1976 KZ900.
