new chain and sprockets was created by 55fbomb
I am buyin a new chain and sprockets, converting my 77 1000 to 530. im buying an 18 front and 45 rear and a 120 link o ring chain, anyone see any issues here? will that be enough chain with my GS arm? im guessing an 18 front will be fine and present no clearance issues? anyone remember if they had to use shims behind the front sprocket? if so how many, or how thick? thanks.

We can calculate the correct chain length if you measure from the center-to-center on the output shaft to the rear axle with the axle at the front of the adjustment slot.

Then knowing sprocket sizes it's just a 'simple' calculation to get the chain length. you will need at least 1 spacer washer behind the front sprocket for chain clearance with the transmission cover. Addiitionally you need to align the front and rear sprockets otherwise you'll get rapid wear on the chain and sprockets. That's something you'll have to check as the Suzuki sprocket carrier may be offset a little over the Kawasaki version.

On my 750, the biggest front sprocket that will clear the chain guard is 17T. Don't know about yours.

i will do some measuring tomorrow, so i can figure out how much chain i need. i dont have a chain guard so that shouldnt be a problem, i just want that front sprocket as big as possible for maximum clearance at the pivot for the swingarm.

18 should not be a problem. I forget how the front sprocket is built. I had no problems with it rubbing the cases. Roy

116 link chain is enough - the calculation come out at 115.14 links - so rounded up you get the 116.

Now we have another rider with the 530 chain conversion. He will never go back to the big chain,I bet.

I wish I could install the 530 chain on the bike I am building but I already have a custom sprocket built in 630 size for the Ninja rear wheel.

It is aluminum and I probably will wear it out pretty quick and them will have the 530 chain.

Where can one have a steel sprocket made?

Why does it have to be custom?
