First, I would like to say thanks to everyone who posts on here, u have been awesome helps with my kz1000 project. I thought i would share some info to everyone. A lot of guys who have done swaps for the front triples had to do a lot like pushing the stems out and welding bushings. That's a lot of work sometimes and you are trusting your life on a weld holding a stem at 100mph. I ordered a gsxr 1000 front end (2001) for my swap. I was going to push the stems and do all that until my local motorcycle shop told me to look into changing the bearings first bc it is safer. I found a company that sells the upper bearing to fit the gsxr stem for only $45 and thanks to one of the forum guys on here, allballsracing has the lower bearing. The stems on the gsxr 1000 and the stem for the kz are almost the same length. No pushing, no welding, just a straight swap with new bearings. Just thought I would let u guys know! Website for top bearing is WWW.twfracing.com look in the z parts section. I will posts pics when I get my bearings in the mail.

I will post the part numbers this weekend. No mods to the top triple were needed due to the custom bearing. I looked for a few days trying to find a size of 30mm x 47mm x 15mm and the only thing I found was VERY expensive. Until, I stumbled apon a forum for sv650s fitting hayabusa fronts and there top bearing is the same size. They mentioned the website i bought the bearing from in there post. They only have one bearing on that website and its the one you need.

I am doing this swap as well on a 78 KZ 650. Do you know if this scenario will play out the same for me I am using the front end off a 2004 gsxr 1000.

I think the 01 to 08 gsxr 1000 fronts are the same. The only thing I would worry about is the stem length bc I don't know if yours is the same length as mine. This website will help u with the bearing fit up and finding the right one. www.caferacer.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=16794 the gsxr bottom and top bearing is 30 x 55 x 15. Lots of the older bikes have that same size you would just have to get a tapered bearing that size. Most of the time the top bearing on our bikes is 25 x 47 x 15. If that is the case for yours then u can get the bearing I listed above for the top of the triple that is 30 x 47 x 15 and it will slide right on.

On the cafe website with the bearing listings, it shows your bearings to be 30mm ID. If this is correct then you can use stock bearings. The only thing to worry about is the stem lengths, it may be the only thing to make the swap not work.
