Which forks swap easier? 98 zx6r or 05 zx6r was created by 1100fighter
I have a 81 kz1100a and I am looking to do a front end swap. Which one is simpler 98 zx6r or 05 zx6r? I find alot of info on 05 but none on the 98.
Appreciate the help.

i think in most cases its about the same.u just need to swap out the tree stems.
in this case it may just be , which 1 u like best. since u have chosen 2 oposite looks.

if u are conserned about ground clearance, the newer fork may be easier to find a drop tree for.

1 thing to consider would be the speedo. some bikes have electronic some cable. if u use a modle with a cable drive, u may be able to keep the kz speedo.

So are the tree stems the same OD That they will swap? The 05 forks look nicer but are missing calipers and top tree. 98 is cheaper but missing wheel and tire. I've read a few posts I could find on the 05 swap. Some talked about machining?

Sorry, but i dont know the stem sizes. i'm just generalizing about the task.

calipers wont cost too much $, nor will a top tree($30 to $70 maybe?) look on ebay.. and if u want more ground clearance, u will buy a new top tree anyways. but a drop type tree will cost a few hundered bucks.

for the 98 , the wheel with disks could cost $150 to $200?

the more parts u get together the better. id go 05 myself.

as far as machining goes. sometimes they just press out sometimes they can be gotten out with a grinder some need machining. dont sweat the little stuff. get the front end u want, then take a good look at the tree and go from there. no matter what u get there will be some work to be done. but not big dollar type stuff.
someone may jump in here, there r some front ends that r just a bearing swap.
here is a thread that shows basicaly what is involved. if u have no equipt to do this , dont frett. it can be done cheaply.

have u seen this thread ? there may be some help for u in here.

Thanks Mark! I ended up buying the newer front which was actually a 06. Now I need to find out where to get the bushing sleeve I need to put it together.

What bushing or sleeve are you referring to? More than likely you'll have to have the stem machined down or replaced to fit KZ bearings.

Keep in mind what that bike has been gone through regarding wear and tear... 2005 is newer...

You'll also decrease your turn radius with wider forks, as in my case relocated the tank, seat and rear plastic back about 1-1.5" where the fork tubes won't hit the tank and I have full turn capabilities... ;)

Les I was referring to the bushing that old man rock used. Even if I have the zx6 stem machined down to the kz size won't I still need a bushing or sleeve for the top tripple? Help? I weld and fabricate for work so moving the tank is do able. I don't have a lathe so I'm going to have to pay for machine work. So I'd like to get it right the first time. I posted a link to my fork pic. I can't seem to get it into the thread.

Just an update. I ended up going with the 06 ninja front end. I picked up all the parts needed to complete the front end. Rim(eBay), calipers(eBay). A set of gold pro taper bars and pro taper risers. Leon Aka 531blackbanshee is doing the machine work on my triples. I'm going to start a build thread to show the whole transformation of my bike. Just wanted to say big thanks guys for the help!
