How much play in the gearbox? was created by bluezbike
I have split a spare set of engine cases to see what's going on in there as I have never done that. Everything looked pretty clean, no broken bits, checked how much play in the rods on the crankshaft found it to be 0.30 well within the service limit so I then had a look at the gearbox figuring it had a chance to be a good one and I found quite a bit of sloppiness in the way the individual gears sat on both output and input shafts ie. I could rock them sideways away from 90 degrees to the shafts. How much play should there be? I have not seen any info in the Clymer manual. All the teeth are there with no chips and no obvious wear at all especially in second gear, all the shift forks look good too and measure out well inside limits.
Any help very appreciated,

there are lots of things shon in the manual that u can measure.
shift fork pin and groves sizes.fork and grove sizes.bear and shaft clearances.
gear back lash. shaft diameters.
have a good look at the sides and corners of the gears dogs. right where they contact as they try to mesh together. look for burnt signs on the fork tines, and make sure they are straight.
have fun. measure away my freind.
