New fork springs smaller? was created by gwolever
Hey guys. I bought some Progressive fork springs and new fork seals for my rebuild project and had a couple of questions for ya.
1. First of all, after taking off the fork caps (finally) and dumping out all the nasty old oil, should I be pouring anything down the tube to flush out that old oil residue or not?
2. Secondly, I pulled out the old springs and noticed they were considerably bigger than the new progressives that I ordered. I bought the new Progressive springs from Old Bike Barn.com. They were the right part number I believe since I put all my bike info in parts search for results on that site. The part number was 11-1108.
Here is a pic of the old, bigger spring compared to the new, smaller one:
The installation manual in the box has my bike listed as one that these springs replace (KZ1000 81-82).
Do you think I should go with these, or should I contact Old Bike Barn about the order?
3. And lastly, I bought some 15w fork oil. My bike manual says to use 11.9 fl.oz. (dry capacity), 10.8 fl.oz. (wet capacity). Is that each fork? How much oil do you guys use in your bikes?
Thanks guys.

If it was mine I would flush the tubes with fork oil. Those new springs look mighty short compared to the old. I would check them against the length specified in the Kawasaki Manual. Regarding the amount of fork oil - don't depend on the volumetric measurement. Instead, take a look in your Kawasaki manual regarding how to measure from the top of the fork tube to the fluid level. This is a much more accurate way of ensuring the correct fork oil level. Ed

Thanks for the input. I emailed both OldBikeBarn.com as well as Progressive Suspension to see what they have to say about it.
I also found the email response sent to me from OldBikeBarn.com (in response to me asking them which fork springs to order) and the tech said that the 11-1108 is the one part number listed on their site for my bike.
Progressive has part number 11-1110 listed on their site like martin_csr said. WTF?

CSR model has leading axle fork (fork extends below the axle).
Standard model has axle located at bottom of fork.
Progressive shows 11-1108 springs for standard model and 11-1110 springs for CSR model.

Good idea Martin. I will call Progressive Monday.
OldBikeBarn emailed me back and said they got the wrong part number when they sent me the springs. They are going to send me the 11-1110 on Monday.
