electrified gas tank! was created by lemo32
Anybody used electrolysis to remove tank rust? got my soda ash today, got my battery charger throwing twelve volts at it, saw a few things on the web and decided to try it.

Yes I have done so before. A suggestion I would make is to buy some plastic window screen and wrap it around a couple a lengths of threaded rod. You can bend the rod to the shape you need, push it into the small hard to reach areas in the tank, and the plastic screen will keep it from grounding on the tank,

If you have a lot of rust this method takes too long. Use a acid rinse. There should be a lot of post on this subject. I have posted before with pictures. Roy

I just did this on my bike a few weeks ago. Worked like a charm. I put the bolt though a spray can cap. I left mine running for about 5 days. Poured off the rust every day till there hardly wasnt any.
I then rinsed it well then through in some 2 stoke gas and sloshed it around to coat the tank.

Haven't done the electrolysis method but if you have the time I'd recomend you try soaking it in white vinegar for a week or two. Got my rusty kz1000 tank spotless. I posted pics in a thread about it recently.

Be very careful that the electrode does not get too close to the metal. I........i mean a "friend" burnt a hole through the tank using that method. It works too good sometimes. It did remove the rust......and the metal!

I used it. Mine was light rust. I used it on a seat pan.. Can't go wrong with a method where u don't have to actually do anything:)

Trust me, you can go wrong. I have a nice gas tank with a quarter size hole to prove it.

I had great results using this method, no more rust, I used an old motorcycle chain wrapped in a rubber mesh, it was the easiest tank clean out I ever did.
