77' KZ1000 Rear Sets Options was created by KZ CAFE
I am new to the forum and wanted to say hello! I have read thru many of the posts regarding rear sets from Blast From the Past, and Tarozzi etc. I am looking for a less expensive solution.

My bike is a 1977 KZ1000 that I am converting into a cafe. My budget is pretty tight any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for your time and advice.

James

if u can do some fab work, it opens the door for many option. many new bike rearsets will work. if u want a bolt on set. then u r very limited.

I used the rearsets from a ZX6 would have to look and see what year they were from but I had to weld mounting tabs to bolt them to. pretty sure it was less than 100.00 total.

if you take the right and left side brackets off and swap and flip em upside down ...you have instant rear sets.....first pull the cotter pins and remove the foot pegs...then the two acorn nuts off a the frame dowel/bolts..and claw hammer and screw driver pry the leg off...now....flip the leg so it will fit the other side of the bike...and upside down also...now the peg leg is up and back instead off down and forward...then play with the pegs so they fet and will not fold but up like before...it often needs a hammer tap to get the cotter pins to go the first time as the peg is a tad diff upside down .... grab the rubber cover of the peg with a vise grip and rag to soften and rotate it so it is tread up again......you can get a shorter shifter lever on e-bay for 10$...they work killer...the brake arm will now be too long also...both foot controls can be cut/shortened and welded to suit where your new toe position is...i leave mine long and just reach em now and then...big feet ect...

in my pic...click to enlarge...you cant even tell they are 3 up and 3 back from before unless you look at the rear brake pedal

the new leverage is right heel to axle and feels awesome... now im on my toes/ball of my feet when riding...super cool...better than tarrozis feel wise and the pegs are stock...way better feel...i have had both...tarrozis look cooler but screw your shoes up(mark em way bad aluminum shifter marks...and side of sole marked up nasty... and eat the sole of your shoes in one ride...these are the ticket and are near free...work killer too...changes the whole riding position...

I plan on building a cafe out of my 77kz1000 as well. Dont know if you've seen them or not but there's a modestly priced (170ish? with linkage) set of universal rear-sets on dimecitycycles.com. That's probably what i'll end up using.
good luck on your project.

The Tarozzi's from FastFromThePast.com are about the only option for bolt ons. In my opinion, no sets are cheap. You'll be looking at 3 digits for just about any set in good shape (unless you can scavenge some from the scrap yard, but that will require some fab work and probably replacement linkage parts).

For bolt-ons there are also Raask rearsets. They ain't cheap either.

I've seen the "swap and flip" done, it's very old school and it works. Not only do you have to adjust the length of the brake and shifter arms, to retain use of the kickstarter you have to remove or disable the spring that moves the right hand side peg back into position. That way you just flip the peg up and the kickstarter will be able to travel the full distance.

yes good point...i've done it for so long i'm used to it....time for new battery cause i've been letting it sit a lot...so up with the peg...first kick and away..but it takes getting used to kicking it at first i guess.......the flip and swap is so quick and is rearset for sho.....not too cool though to bling it up i guess...but works hella good

Hey guys...sorry to revive this old thread but I happen to have a 77 kz650 that will be a full cafe restoration/build and was wondering if it can also be done to my kz650? Don't see any issues from what I can remember seeing on my frame. Any thoughts are welcomed... Thanks!!!!!
