Well according to your bodywork and front end on there it actually looks like a 76 kz900,what is the build date on the steering head sticker and what does the title say it is?
Im going to guess its a really early production 76 kz900 according to the vin number anyway.
That bike could be worth some money if the vin number is right B)

Z1 shows the 75z1 production run of frames ending with z1f-85700 and the 76 kz900 frames starting with z1f- 87501.
Yours falls in between the 2 runs. B)

It always makes me wonder why the previous owner(s) would buy a top of the line model and then screw around with it (i.e. paint, sissy bar, etc.) and abandon it when it hasn't even been ridden very much (32k is pretty low mileage). Then rather then selling it when he has become bored, let folks yank parts (front fender, engine and side cover, airbox, etc.) from it and let it sit in the weather with open carbs. Would the same person leave a $2800 revolver sit out in the weather to rust into a lump when he got tired of target shooting? Probably.

I'm glad to see you plan to restore the bike. It can be a really nice machine when you're finished if you take your time and pay close attention to the details. Good luck with it. Ed

Well, That really does clear up a lot of what i was getting tru some people. As far as the bike, A guy owed my brother in-law some money for doing taxes and gave him this bike. Brother in law does not ride at all, And also looked like as if he took a hack saw and tore up the front fender header, muffler and wireing on it. Its going to need a lot of work done to it. Just been trying to get my ducks in a row for when i do tear it right down to the frame i can start to rebuild it right. Not looking for prefection but main deal is going to be reliability and driveability also.

If you have the numbers correct, then you have a very early KZ900 (Made in Japan) with a Z1 engine? though I suspect there maybe a typo with the Z1E number
