I had the same problem on my KZ650. Here's what worked for me:

I always use an impact gun, caps in place. Has always worked for me, same kinda action as taking lug nuts off with the tire off the ground.\

I have the same forks & took mine apart by gently tapping a 13mm socket (make sure its a multi point one) on a long extension bar over the 'nut' inside the upper part of the fork leg. The 13mm socket just grabs the inner nut tightly enough to stop it turning but wont mark the nut. When you re-assemble use some duct tape to hold the 13mm socket to the extension bar or the socket will want to stay inside the fork leg attached to the nut.
The retaining mechanism (nut) of the 76/77 KZ750 is different than the 78/79. The wooden broom handle trick wont work on your forks unless you have the later forks in your bike.
Read this thread, the link is to page 3, pay particular attention to the 2nd post on that page & from then on is your solution.

Here is the socket I used. I think 9/16. It holds the nut and you don't have to worry about it getting stuck inside when you reinstall

I like the idea of the 13 mm socket. But I used the
Gator Grip
I purchased from Walmart for $14.95. You will need extentions. The nice thing about it is you can use it to replace a set and carry it in your car or bike. Need to make sure its the normal size one and not the King Gator Grip.
