Rebuild or Replace front MC on 79 SR650 was created by hypnotikrobot
My bike has no front brakes and the previous owner told me the master cylinder would need rebuilt.
Rather than buy a rebuild kit and find that the whole MC is shot i figured I'd buy a new, modern replacement. Anyone have any specific recommendations? I'm fairly green about these bikes, everything else i ever built had internal brakes and were mechanical.
I did some searching and found this post by Steel, kzrider.com/forum/5-chassis/464009-kz100...ster-cylinder#464682 . that's in reference to a KZ1000 though but still dual front discs. Would that work for my SR?

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationNo eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationI also found these on ebay.
BRAND NEW FRONT BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER KAWASAKI KZ200 KZ400 KZ550 KZ650 KZ700
and also
NEW FRONT BRAKE MASTER CYLINDER & LEVER KAWASAKI KZ KZ750 KZ900 KZ1000 KZ1300
Anyone used these? they hold up or are they cheap junk?
Also, which one will i need? I assume the version listed for KZ650 won't work with my SR because of the dual discs. Will the KZ1000 listing work?
Really having trouble being certain i'm finding the right stuff.

The part I mentioned in the first post that Steel had recommended for 750 and 1000 models is #43015-1498.
It's coming up around $215-$240 but if that's what is recommended over those ebay listings i posted then that's how it goes.

If it was mine I would clean out the MC and put a new piston in it. You can buy a genuine Kawasaki (still active) piston or an aftermarket rebuild kit (see link below) for less than $40. There's not much else to wear out in the MC unless the previous owner put sand in it. Keep in mind if the previous owner never performed normal brake maintenance you may find out that the brake caliper also needs to be cleaned out and rebuilt. Ed

I will second that one. When I opened up the MC on my bike right after buying it, the fluid looked like mud soup, and the lines were starting to crack to boot.
I was able to rebuild the MC, change the lines to high pressure woven stainless steel, and replace the fluid for less than the cost those 'newer' calipers you have listed there. (And I could at least be certain that the parts would work well.)
I know there are more powerful braking systems available but the stock duals on my 650 stop you plenty fast should the need arise. I think with a full rebuild you'll be happy with the results.

If you have the master shown in Ed's drawings, you should be good with a repair kit, but take it apart first and check the bore.
If you have this one it is made of cheese and most likely the bore is badly pitted and hence not possible to salvage in any reasonable way.
