Swing arm modding was created by lushbaugh
I have three swingarms two 1k and one shorter one. I have been planning to lengthening one with another or most likely cutting at the pivot and re boxing it longer, any pics of anything related especially a jig would be great, ill be doing this within a monthh so any ideas/advice would be awesome, chris

How much are you planning to lengthen it?
I normally would cut the donor arm in front of rear brake stay bracket to make it easier to use stock brake parts, then cut the other arm where ever it needs to be to get right length then slug the two together before welding them.
Remember the axle plates will be further apart the more length you add this way. B)

I did mine similar to what Wireman described. I made a jig on a 3/4 piece of plywood and used readybolt, nuts and washers to keep the axle spread the same as stock. I was able to extend 2 1/2 inches and keep stock width.

you need a flat surface and some way to clamp.

boxing the front is prolly the easiest way.

just start cutting and welding and don't stop until you fix it or f__k it up where no one can  .

thats my approach anyway.

i have a lil more time to expound, .

jigs are cool, for things you are going to build several of.
for one off stuff you need something flat and strong enough to prevent warping, and that you can clamp to.

i get by with a 3/4 inch plate that i made a table out of and two sets of v-blocks and several different types of clamps.

any swingarm i have ever welded on tweeked somehow when released after welding, requiring me to clamp it down and twist it back around so it was square.

if you are going to modify a swingarm,
you have to have the capacity to check it for square,
and bend it back to square.

if you think you can do it,

you can.

if you think you can't,

your right.

I found the process or sequence of welds makes a huge difference on the outcome of a new build.

Yes the metal will tend to pull in direction of weld as it cools/shrinks B)

Les, you mention sequential welds, comparable to stitch welding sheet metal and doing one on one side then moving to the other than back? And warping is why i asked, im a compitant welder but i wanted imput.from those that have, im not above asking the grey bushes for tips to greatly improve my chances for success lol thank you guys for taking time to explain.

When building a new arm the order in which you weld each component together affects the squareness and critical measurement areas. Start at the front and work your way to the back, the arm will be narrow at the back, start at the back and go to the front, you have other issues. figuring out the sequence is what makes keeping them in tolerance possible. You weld so you understand just how much things move around and how they move around.

Starting at front and working back gives the stresses from welding some place to go,like starting in the middle and working out to the ends when torquing down a big part. B)
