I have clip-ons on my kz1000 and that's what I did. It's well worn and I'm going to be changing gauges in the near future since I'm probably going to be switching to superbike bars.
1977 KZ1000A With 1980 KZ1000A MKII engine, Wiseco 1105 kit, Dyna S Ignition, 3 Ohm Dyna Coils, Cams, Mikuni RS34 Carbs, Vance and Hines Pro Pipe with Comp Baffle

I've been going without since I bought the KZ with them broken. I almost exclusively ride in town so there's plenty of traffic to gauge speed. After a while you get a great feel for what different speeds feel like.
Go green, buy a Kawasaki!
